IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL are exams conducted to test the
proficiency of a candidate in English language. Though the objective of the 3
exams is same, but there are some differences between them. Have you ever
wondered this? Well, we are going to discuss the main differences between the
three.
The very first difference between the three arises on the
basis of the language adopted by the exam authorities. Where IELTS and PTE rely
more on British and Australian English, academics of TOEFL relies on American
English.
In general, IELTS is accepted in Canada, European countries
and Australia while TOEFL is more accepted in the U.S for MBA Programs. The
academic PTE is making a good headway by being accepted all over the world for various
courses.
In IELTS speaking exam,
you speak face-to-face with the examiner which proves to be more comforting for
some candidates, while it may be uncomfortable for others. The other three
sections of IELTs are paper based. Whereas, in case of both TOEFL and PTE speaking
, you speak into a micro phone and the system records your voice. Again, this
can be more comfortable for some people and discomforting for others. The other three sections of TOEFL and PTE are
computer based.
All sections of PTE and TOEFL are conducted in one sitting
while in case of IELTS Listening, Reading, and Speaking are conducted in one
sitting but speaking is conducted separately.
Evaluation of IELTS is done manually while there is no human
involvement in evaluation of PTE and TOEFL.
The duration for IELTS exam is 2 hours 45 minutes, for TOEFL
it is 3 hours 10 minutes to 4 hours 20 minutes, and about 3 hours for PTE. The
score range is 0-120 for TOEFL, 10-90 for PTE and 0-9 bands for IELTS.
PTE and IELTS have general and academic versions. The
general version of theses exams is for candidates seeking immigration or
permanent residency in English speaking countries. The academic versions are for students who
want to pursue their studies abroad. TOEFL is only for students.
So these are the general differences between IELTS, TOEFL,
and PTE. Make sure that you apply for the right exam based on the course you
choose for attaining higher education in abroad.
